It is managed under the jurisdiction of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Sanctuary was established to protect natural and cultural resources in coastal California waters. Some activities are regulated, such as oil and gas exploration, dredging and wildlife disturbance. Many activities, such as fishing and boating, are allowed. Research, education and local partnerships are key elements in managing the sanctuary.
